‘Chill Out and Read!’ with Stillwater Public Library

Readers of all ages will be chilling out and reading during the Stillwater Public Library’s annual Winter Reading program. The reading program, which runs until Valentine’s Day, kicks off with a private party at the Stillwater Winter Wonderland ice rink on Saturday, Dec. 9, from 10 a.m.- Noon.

Children, parents, seniors and teens are welcome to come to the event to skate for free and to participate in activities like polar bear water races, story time, “book walks,” and a snowman potato head photo op.

“The top activity on everyone’s list will be registering for the ‘Chill Out and Read’ program,” said Lynda Reynolds, library director. “Winter reading is great for the whole family. Kids keep up their reading skills over the break and adults get some much needed stress relief during these hectic winter months.”

The goal for readers is to read at least a little bit every single day (15 minutes a day is the suggested minimum). Readers will receive a winter reading tracker to log the number of days they read. Adults and teens who prefer to track reading online may do so by registering for or using an existing Wandoo account from links on the library’s website at http://library.stillwater.org.

Readers will earn incentives as they complete their daily reading:

  • For every five days of reading completed, children will earn a small prize, while teens and adults will earn an entry into their programs’ grand prize drawing.
  • Each time 20 days are logged, participants in the children and teen programs may choose a free book, while adults will earn a $5 library fine coupon.
  • At the end of the program, one reader in the children’s program will win a Lego set; one teen will win a $75 bookstore gift card; and one adult will win a $100 gift card to the local merchant of their choice.

The library will also be holding “Snowball Cinema” throughout December. Winter themed movies will be shown on the third floor on Thursday at 6 p.m. Popcorn will be provided, and children are encouraged to bring a pillow and wear PJs while enjoying the movies and eating popcorn. Movies include:

  • Dec 14 – Frozen
  • Dec 21 – Polar Express
  • Dec. 28 – Happy Feet

The winter reading program is free, open to the public and sponsored by the Friends of the Library and Visit Stillwater.
