Story provided by OSU Allied Arts

Travel back in time with The Hot Club of San Francisco.

Let the Hot Club of San Francisco take you back to 1930s France with its unique Cinema Vivant performance; which features vintage films accompanied by live Gypsy swing. Audiences can see Cinema Vivant Nov. 17 in the OSU Seretean Center Concert Hall at 8 p.m.

Capturing the true atmosphere of a 1930s town in the French countryside, Cinema Vivant features some of the first ever stop-motion films, musicians who play guitars and fiddles to every movement on the screen, and Gypsy swing dancing. Just as locals in these times were drawn to the traveling Gypsy camps, the audience will be captivated by the charming Cinema Vivant and the celebration of the innovation and imagination of this time period. This ensemble of accomplished and versatile musicians celebrates the music of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli’s pioneering Quintette du Hot Club de France with style and panache.

“This performance will have it all,” said Brandon Mitts, Arts, Culture and Entertainment manager. “With stop-motion films, live music and Gypsy swing dancing, you can’t ask for much more. It’s sure to be entertaining for a multitude of reasons.”

The performance will feature two silent films from Ladislaw Starewicz, who pioneered stop-action animated movies before World War I. In addition, the audience will see another film by Charley Bowers, who introduced animation to films in the 1920s. The night is sure to be memorable, as every aspect of Cinema Vivant stays true to the historical roots of this type of entertainment.

Tickets for the performance are $10 for students and children 12 and under to $20 for adults. Tickets can be purchased online at tickets.okstate.edu.  For more information, contact the OSU Allied Arts office at (405) 744-7509 or [email protected].
