Retirees will learn about volunteer opportunities with Habitat for Humanity at this month’s “Making the Most of Retirement” program. Operation manager Stephanie Hesser and ReStore manager Jennifer Muret will be the guest speakers for the program which takes place Wednesday, April 18 at 1:30-2:30 p.m. in the Stillwater Public Library.

Hesser has been with Stillwater Habitat for over seven years where she oversees everything related to the organization’s building program and construction. She says that Habitat for Humanity relies heavily on volunteers to be able to provide their services to the community.

“Construction volunteers are needed to help keep the costs of our houses affordable,” said Stephanie Hesser, Operations Manager. “At the ReStore, which is our primary fundraiser, we use volunteers to help customers and process donations which help maximize our fundraising efforts.”

Volunteers who help with building typically complete tasks that involve basic construction, siding installation, painting and hanging drywall. Volunteers at the ReStore provide customer service, but they also perform many hands-on tasks like tinkering with items like household appliances, testing appliances, making minor furniture repair and cleaning donations.

According to Hesser, volunteers will gain an abundance of knowledge doing this work.

“We have a talented crew of volunteers that love to share their skills by teaching new volunteers,” said Hesser.  “You will certainly learn more about construction when volunteering on our build sites; and at our ReStore, many volunteers utilize their professional or hobby skills as well as acquire new ones in a fun atmosphere.”

“Making the Most of Retirement” is a monthly program coordinated by the OSU Emeriti. The program addresses topics of interest to retirees and those who are nearing retirement.

The next program takes places on May 16 with Becky Taylor presenting a program about “Volunteering at Our Daily Bread.”
