Select left-turn lanes close beginning June 5 due to 6th & Perkins project

MEDIA RELEASE

Select left-turn lanes at three major intersections will close beginning June 5 to accommodate larger trucks traveling via detours for the Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) project at 6th Avenue and Perkins Road. Left turns at these intersections can still be made from combined left-through lanes.

Some left-turn lanes at the 6th and Main, Hall of Fame and Main, and Hall of Fame and Perkins intersections will be affected. Traffic signals will be timed to allow protected left-hand turns from the combined left-through lanes. Drivers should expect some delays when traveling through these impacted intersections.

The turn lanes are closing in response to ODOT’s closure of the west leg of 6th Avenue near the Stillwater Milling Company for construction. Closing the dedicated left-turn lanes will give larger vehicles more room to make turns when traveling to or from this area.

The closed left-turn lanes and west leg of 6th Avenue are expected to reopen later this summer.

The City of Stillwater will alter signal lights and place orange and black signs to direct drivers into the appropriate travel lanes. There will be construction and detour signs in the affected areas to direct drivers through the detour route as they travel near the project area.

Businesses around the construction project are still accessible. These include:

  • Daylight Donuts
  • H&R Block
  • Kinnunen Sales & Rental
  • Phillips 66/OnCue Express
  • Sonic Drive-In
  • Stillwater Milling Company
  • Suddenlink Communications

The City of Stillwater suggests drivers use these alternate routes when traveling to the above businesses.

  • Northbound and southbound traffic: Main, Lewis, Lowry and Burdick streets.
  • Westbound and eastbound traffic: Virginia, 3rd, 9th and 12th avenues.

ODOT anticipates completing the project by September 2017. The City of Stillwater posts updates on the project online at http://stillwater.org/page/home/government/current-projects/transportation-projects/6th-avenue-perkinsroad.
