YMCA of Greater Oklahoma City and Stillwater Family YMCA Join Forces for Stronger YMCA Association

MEDIA RELEASE

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK (December 3, 2016) – The YMCA of Greater Oklahoma City and the Stillwater Family YMCA have recently agreed to join forces in a strategic alliance— improving efficiency, creating a broader reach and better serving their communities.

On January 1, 2017, the Stillwater Family YMCA will become a branch of the YMCA of Greater Oklahoma City association, which currently consists of 10 branches throughout the Oklahoma City metro area as well as four program centers, the YMCA Military Welcome Center at Will Rogers World Airport, the YMCA Lincoln Park Senior Center and dozens of after-school, teen program, summer camp and youth sports sites. YMCA Camp Classen in Davis, Oklahoma is also a branch of the YMCA of Greater Oklahoma City association. The entire association will continue to be under the leadership of the YMCA of Greater Oklahoma City’s president and CEO Mike Grady.

“This represents a coming together of talents and ideas that will allow us to fulfill our promise of serving more people, improving their health and strengthening our communities,” said Grady.

The combined not-for-profit organization will have an estimated operating revenue of nearly $30 million, more than 92,000 members and more than 800 employees.

The management staff and a task force of board members from both Ys have worked diligently to bring together all aspects of these two entities, culminating in a unanimous vote to join forces from both boards of directors.  Voting took place on October 25 during the Stillwater Family YMCA’s board meeting and the YMCA of Greater Oklahoma City’s board meeting on October 27.

“We are thrilled about the potential these combined organizations will have to make an even bigger impact in the Stillwater community,” said Steve Brown, current board chair for the Stillwater Family YMCA.  “We are most excited for the increased resources that will be available to further the mission of the Y and create meaningful and lasting impact and change in the lives of so many in our community. We understand there is still a lot of work ahead to make this alliance a success, and we are ready for the challenge.”

YMCAs nationally are examining ways to have the most powerful and far-reaching impact. Many smaller Ys around the country are joining larger, established associations to better serve their communities.

“Through this consolidation and collaboration, the Y’s collective impact will be greater for nurturing the potential of kids, promoting healthy living and fostering a sense of social responsibility,” Grady said.

Stillwater Family YMCA executive director Dan Carman has decided that, while being in full support of the alliance, he will take this opportunity to retire at the end of the year.  “I have been blessed with the opportunity to lead the Stillwater Family Y over the past twelve years,” said Carmen,  “And I wish only the best of success for the entire association and the Stillwater community as this new alliance moves forward.”
