STILLWATER, Okla. (SEPT. 1, 2016) – The Sheerar Museum of Stillwater History opens a new exhibit, “1916-2016: A Century of Cowboy Cadets”, on Wednesday, September 7, 2016. A reception with refreshments will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. The opening event is free to the public.
The exhibit details the 100-year history of Oklahoma State’s Reserve Officer Training Corps, one of 17 charter ROTC programs nationwide initiated following the passing of the National Defense Act of 1916. Many men and women with local ties spent time in OSU’s ROTC program, including two 2016 inductees into the U.S. Army ROTC National Hall of Fame last June. Major General Douglas Dollar, founder of the Oklahoma Military Hall of Fame, and the 18th President of Oklahoma State University, V. Burns Hargis, were part of the inaugural class of the ROTC National Hall of Fame at Fort Knox, Ky., founded this year as part of the centennial celebration of ROTC.
From World War I through current 21st Century conflicts, graduates of the OSU ROTC program have served with distinction. The program has also produced successful business leaders, authors, and community leaders nationwide.
This exhibit, produced with the help of OSU ROTC staff and Oklahoma State Special Collections and University Archives, will remain in the Sheerar Museum’s inner gallery through January.
The Sheerar Museum is a non-profit museum administered by the Stillwater Museum Association board of trustees. For more information on activities throughout the week, contact the museum’s director, Roger Moore, at (405)377-0359.
