Artist Talk on Sunday at Modella

Modella Art Gallery presents an artist talk by three featured fiber and textiles artists from the current show Text and Textiles: Miriam Young, Judy Laine, and Cherrie Hampton. They will be talking about where their inspiration comes from, their use of fiber, and their craft. This artist talk will be held on Sunday, June 3, from 2 to 3 p.m. at Modella Art Gallery at 721 S. Main.

Miriam Young is a fiber artist who uses the traditional arts of crafting knitting, crocheting, macrame, and embroidery to create wearable and decorative objects. She feels a strong connection to previous generations and she strives to convey some of those connections by incorporating traditional hand crafts such as lace, beading, and embroidering.

Judy Laine is a self-trained artist who considers herself a Renaissance woman, with a penchant for experimenting with and combining artistic mediums. Laine states, “I especially love using fibers that are not traditionally used for paper-making. I like to experiment with flowers, grasses, and other items.”

Cherrie Hampton states, “My art quilts tell the stories of the world around and within me with fabric, ink, paint, thread, and a domestic sewing machine.” Her formal artistic training is in classical vocal music and opera, but she began to explore in fiber art. Her vocal training and love for fiber art has developed her style of interpretation that manifests itself in distinctly realistic works.
