Chickasaw Boomer Blast Rescheduled for Labor Day

MEDIA RELEASE

(STILLWATER, OKLAHOMA / July 7, 2016) – The Chickasaw Boomer Blast fireworks show is rescheduled for Labor Day Monday, Sept. 5 at Boomer Lake Park (Lakeview Road and Washington Street).

Free parking lots at the park will open at 6:30 p.m. and the firework show will begin at 9:30 p.m. Residents are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy the show. Lakeview Road Bridge will close to traffic to allow pedestrians to watch the fireworks.

Chickasaw Boomer Blast was postponed on its original date of Monday, July 4 and its makeup date of Tuesday, July 5 because heavy rains the day before made the park’s grass parking lots too soft to park vehicles.

“Our primary concern based on experience was the deep mud would cause vehicles to become stuck in the parking lots, so we decided to take a precaution and reschedule the event,” Special Projects Director John McClenny said. “We were also concerned that using the grounds before they dried might cause damage to the park, which serves our residents year-round.”

In the event of inclement weather before or during the fireworks show, the City of Stillwater follows a contingency plan. This includes assessing whether the grass parking lots are able to support the anticipated 2,000 vehicles that come to Boomer Blast each year.

It is also tradition that the fireworks show be rescheduled for Labor Day should it be postponed on both July 4 and July 5.

Concerns over safety and the ability to relocate such a high volume of traffic to parking spots outside of the park also led to the decision to reschedule.

“Boomer Lake Park is the best spot in Stillwater with enough open space to accommodate the spectators, cars and fireworks zone for this event,” McClenny said. “We hope everyone makes it out to the lake Sept. 5 to celebrate Labor Day and continue the Boomer Blast tradition with us.”

The City of Stillwater would like to thank Chickasaw Telecommunications Services, Oklahoma State University, Kicker, Stillwater Medical Center, Grand River Dam Authority, The Bank N.A., Central Electric Cooperative, Stillwater Chamber of Commerce, OnCue, RCB Bank, Stillwater Frontier Rotary, Stillwater Professional Firefighters Local 2095, Arvest Bank and Charlie’s Discount Drug for their sponsorships.
