The Stillwater Public Library will hold its annual Shred Event Saturday, Feb. 27, from 9-11 a.m. Documents are shred onsite by the professional document destruction company, Shred-Away. They will accept two copier paper sized boxes per car. The event is free and takes place in the parking lot between the Library and the Prairie Arts Center. Donations are accepted at the event to aid in the cost of the service.
“We are grateful to the many participants whose donations make this event available to the community each year,” said Library Director Stacy DeLano. “We especially appreciate Shred-Away, which has sponsored the event for the last 13 years. Our community is fortunate to have its help at a time when shredding sensitive documents is more vital than ever.”
According to The Federal Trade Commission, reports of identity theft doubled in number from 2019 to 2020, with many thieves targeting government funds intended for individuals and small businesses affected by the pandemic. The United States Department of Justice recommends the public stay vigilant against fraud during the pandemic. Shredding documents containing personal information is a method of vigilance.
Participants looking to make the best use of the event can utilize the Library’s shredding webpage at http://library.stillwater.org/annual_shredding_event.php for resources in identifying materials to shred. Participants are also encouraged to speak with their attorney and accountant to assist in identifying documents that may require retention.
While at the event, drivers and passengers should have their masks on whenever windows are down or car doors are open.
“The great thing about the Shred is that you don’t even have to leave your car,” DeLano said. “Library staff and volunteers will direct traffic, provide instructions and unload boxes for participants. Each will wear a mask for public safety, and we ask that participants do the same.”

The Stillwater Public Library is located at 1107 S. Duck St. Library hours are Monday- Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Thursday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
