Payne County teens looking for something to do to kick off their summer are invited to attend Stillwater Public Library’s (SPL) newest teen program, “Cool Makes and Hot Takes.” In this program, attendees make fun crafts while watching a “bad” movie. The event will take place on Friday, May 20, from 6-8 p.m. Space is limited, and registration is required.
The movie for the first program, chosen by the Teen Advisory Committee (TAC), is based on a book series of the same title and features vampires that sparkle, shapeshifting wolves and a very complicated love triangle. It was a very popular movie when it came out in 2008.
Jessica Howe, SPL teen librarian, is excited to provide a laid-back, funny program for teens.
“We all know that teens think a lot of the popular movies from the past are silly, and if we’re all honest when looking back on our favorite movies from when we were teens, we’d probably agree,” Howe said.
This program allows teens to watch older movies in a laid back environment, discuss them and have a few laughs. Teens will also make a craft as a part of “Cool Makes and Hot Takes.” For this edition, they will create watercolor bookmarks.
“It’s always nice to have something to do with your hands when watching a movie,” Howe said. “And, with this craft, teens will go home with something they can use while they’re participating in our Summer Reading Program.”
TAC members, like the ones who planned this program, sign up for a year-long term to help plan teen library programs, provide input on which young adult materials to order and volunteer for events and projects as needed. Members earn community service hours that library staff verify for resumes, college applications and other programs requiring proof of volunteer hours. They also gain leadership experience, make new friends and community connections and are eligible to participate in TAC-only programs and events.
Movie licensing, craft supplies, snacks and drinks for the event are provided thanks to the Friends of the Stillwater Public Library.
