Narrative Borders Exhibition Opens

Media Release

Modella Gallery is pleased to present Narrative Borders exhibit, a compilation of work by artists, Norman Akers and Marty Avrett. The exhibition runs from August 9th – September 22nd 2018, with the opening reception from 6-8pm on Thursday, August 16th.

Akers and Avrett explore the landscapes around us; as colorful abstractions, paintings of a moment in time, and symbolism about the interactions between Native American culture and the forces that shape our sense of place.

Red Hand by Norman Akers

Notable Osage Artist and University of Kansas professor, Norman Akers explores identity through American history, contemporary politics, Native American culture and man-made borders. Akers melds digital images with printmaking techniques to create bold and otherwise unachievable depth and color in the spaces he creates. With thought-provoking layers of symbolism, Akers pieces are intellectually important in discussions of current day immigration laws and national borders. He has a piece in an upcoming show at Crystal Bridges Museum in Bentonville, AR and the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City.

Highly accomplished Oklahoma artist and retired OSU Art professor Marty Avrett compares his search for the truth of a moment in time or place, through two different styles, abstract expressionism and representational painting. Avrett studied with the famous Abstract Expressionist painter, Richard Deibenkorn.

Section Line #2 by Marty Avrett

Avrett created remarkable abstract paintings for a majority of his career. In the past four years, he has largely removed human interpretation from his work and focused on presenting small paintings that capture the truth of the landscape with few effects of civilization to show the natural phenomena of nature. Avrett’s work is featured in the San Francisco Arts Institute’s permanent collection as well as numerous public and private collections in the United States, Mexico, and Europe.
