The Stillwater Eighth Grade Band was selected as an Honor Group for the 2020 Oklahoma Music Educators Association (OkMEA) Conference, to be held in Tulsa this January.
Multiple recordings from the previous year were submitted to a panel for blind judging as part of the application process. “It is quite an honor to be selected as a performing group for the OkMEA Conference,” Katie Robertson, Administrative Coordinator for the association, says. “Twenty bands applied, and only eight groups were chosen by the committee to perform.”
Illustrating the exceptional nature of the young musicians, Stillwater was the only junior high group selected. Seven high school and university ensembles will provide the remaining performances.
“We are thrilled to be an OMEA honor group! This is an exceptional group of students, and I can’t wait for them to experience this memory of a lifetime.” Eighth Grade Band Director Megan Perkins says. “I am very proud of their hard work and dedication towards this performance. I can’t wait to celebrate with them when it all pays off in January!”
The Stillwater Eighth Grade Band will perform as part of the OkMEA Conference Honor Group program on Thursday, January 16 at 7:30 p.m. at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center. Tickets for the event can be purchased for $20 at the door.
Editor’s Note: Another Stillwater based group will also perform at OMEA. The Oklahoma State University Concert Chorale, under the direction of Z. Randall Stroope will perform on the Choral Honor Concert at Trinity Episcopal on Thursday, January 16, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $5.
