Story provided by Stillwater Public Library
Teen anime fans ages 14 through 18 are invited to join the Stillwater Public Library for an anime night on Friday, Nov. 17, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Registration is required for this event.
Teens who attend get to vote on their favorite between two TV-14-rated anime shows. “The Disastrous Life of Saiki K” tells the story of Saiki, a gifted high school student with psychic abilities, as he attempts to navigate everyday life with his friends. The second choice details three high school girls as they create an animation club and design the anime of their dreams in “Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!” If there is a tie, teen librarian Jordan Stine will cast the determining vote.
Stine hopes to revamp the program so that it becomes a regular occurrence for youths in Payne County.
“Anime club was one of the longest-running teen programs at the library until COVID happened,” Stine said. “Anime is one of my passions in life, and I am excited to bring it back so that we can discuss and enjoy new anime.”
Following anime night on Nov. 17, Stine plans to kick off an anime club for teens in 2024.
“If there is enough interest, I’d like to have a monthly or bimonthly program starting in January,” Stine added.
The library’s Teen Advisory Committee (TAC) members also look forward to bringing back anime club and also want it to focus on learning about Asian culture.
“I hope we can do more than watch TV shows,” said a long-time TAC member. “Whether it’s reading manga, watching Asian live-action movies or making crafts, I hope the program can provide a safe space for teens looking to geek out.”
SPL will offer complimentary snacks and beverages for teens provided by the Friends of the Stillwater Public Library. Stine plans to include Japanese snacks for teens to enjoy as well.
Teens ages 14 and up can register for anime night at tinyurl.com/SPLAnimeClub. The anime shows being shown are rated TV-14, so teens must register in advance and may not attend if they are younger than 14.
Stine also encourages all interested teens to apply to join TAC so that they may help make program decisions and suggest book purchases for the library.Teens with questions about TAC should contact Jordan Stine atjordan.stine@stillwater.orgor (405) 372-3633 x8127.
