The Stillwater Public Library is hosting a virtual “Vision Board Party” for teens on Friday, March 12, at 4:30 p.m. Teens will learn how to create vision boards to sort their dreams and passions into achievable goals. Grab and Go Kits with the supplies to participate in the program are available at the library in the young adult section. However, teens are welcome to use their own supplies or add to the ones provided. Kits are first come, first served.
Teen Librarian, Jessica Howe, recalls being overwhelmed by the pressure to figure out big life choices as a teen. “Starting at a very young age, kids are asked what they want to be when they grow up,” said Howe. “By the time I was a teen, I changed my mind too many times to count. I also became very stressed about figuring out my plans for the future.”
Howe hopes that the program will help give teens some tools to help them plan ahead and develop habits that can make big questions and tasks more approachable.
“Creating a vision board can be a great process to help teens succeed at whatever goals they have,” said Howe. “They don’t have to answer the ‘big” questions like ‘what do I want to be when I grow up,’ they can start small.”
Vision boards can also focus on less daunting or more immediate goals. Making a homework completion work plan, practicing instruments more often or even setting aside more “me” time are just a few examples.
There is no “one size fits all” strategy for creating a vision board and being “crafty” is not a requirement. Some vision boards are even digital.
“Even though some vision boards are very elaborate craft projects, there are versions that take a lot less creative energy and are still just as useful,” said Howe. “The best vision boards work well because they are specific to the style of the individual person who created them.”
If teens would like to join the “Vison Board Party” on March 12, they should go to http://tinyurl.com/SPLTeenVision to register. They must be registered to receive the link to join the virtual program.
