“THE CHILD MAY NOT REMEMBER, BUT THE BODY REMEMBERS.”

Story submitted by Dr. McMaughan’s OSU Class

Resilient Payne County (RPC) in Oklahoma has organized an important educational opportunity regarding adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and increased risk of life-long physical and mental health problems and the need to nurture resiliency in our community. RPC is partnering with Dr. McMaughan’s OSU class and Potts Family Foundation (PFF) to hold a virtual ACES education public event.

The documentary Resilience: The Biology of Stress and the Science of Hope uses stunning animation to allowed compelling characters who suffer through a dangerous biological syndrome caused by abuse and neglect during childhood.  Filmmaker James Redford uncovers how early hardships and traumas affect individuals such as toxic stress which can trigger hormones that wreak havoc on the brains and bodies of children putting them at a greater risk for disease, homelessness, prison time, and early death.  This documentary also chronicles the dawn of a movement that is determined to fight back. Trailblazers in pediatrics, education, and social welfare are using cutting-edge science and field-tested therapies to protect children from the insidious effects of toxic stress—and the dark legacy of a childhood that no child would choose to experience.
