Stillwater Public Library kicks off its annual Winter Reading Program on Saturday, Dec. 1, with a family friendly gaming day. The “Game On” kick-off is held to encourage registration in the Dec.-Jan. reading program and features an array of games open to people of all ages.
“Winter reading is essential for children and teens,” said Elizabeth Murray, children’s librarian. “With the long and busy holiday break, it is easy for kids to get out of their reading habits, which makes it harder when they return to school. We encourage parents, grandparents and individual adults, to participate so that we can work together to show kids how important it is to keep reading.”
This winter, readers are working to complete Bingo cards for chances to win a $50 gift card to Bliss Books. A prize will be awarded in the children, teen, and adult categories. Bingo cards include a variety of library and book related activities like reading for 45 minutes, learning about an author, reading under a blanket fort, attending a library program and more.
Participants can begin registering for the program at the “Game On” event which takes place in the library meeting room wing from 1-5 p.m.
Event activities include CandyLand Live, where participants become the actual game pieces on a giant game board. Gamers can also use their investigation and problem solving skills to complete several holiday themed mini-escape rooms. The escape room requires players to search a room, find clues and solve puzzles and codes to open a final container. In addition, families can compete in Bingo rounds and play together on board games throughout the event.
“Game On” is open to the public and no registration is required to attend. Beverages and a Candy Bar with an assortment of treats will be provided. The event and winter program are sponsored by the Friends of the Stillwater Public Library.
