The Pharmacy Technician program at Meridian Technology Center has been named a top training program in Oklahoma.
Pharmacy Technician Guide, an online resource for pharmacy technicians, has ranked the school as the third best place to train for this in-demand career.
“The demand for health care workers continues to increase. The need for qualified pharmacy technicians is no exception,” said Pharmacy Technician instructor Heather Black. “Graduating from an esteemed training program represents a student’s commitment to mastery and professional development. It also lets employers know that you have the technical skills and work ethic needed for this profession. Our reputation is built on the success of our students.”
Students in Meridian’s Pharmacy Technician program develop an understanding of the names, appropriate uses and potential side effects of commonly prescribed medications. In addition to studying in a simulated pharmacy, students learn how to manage, dispense and compound prescription medicines.
The program currently utilizes Computer Rx pharmacy simulation software and is adopting PioneerRx pharmacy simulation software. Both of these platforms allow students to learn in a real-world environment and provides them with hands-on experience with the two most frequently used software programs used in independent pharmacies.
The Pharmacy Technician Guide designation falls on the heels of the program being recognized by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) as an education/training program for students pursuing their Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) credential.
Students can only qualify to take the PTCB exam if they attend a recognized education program or have equivalent work experience. This designation allows students who complete their career training at Tech to be eligible to apply for their PTCB CPhT certification.
The PTCB CPhT exam covers pharmacology, pharmacy law and regulations, compounding, medication safety, quality assurance, inventory management, medication order entry and fill processes, information systems usage and applications, as well as billing and reimbursement.
Due to industry requirements, the Pharmacy Technician program is limited to high school seniors and adults. Individuals interested in the Pharmacy Technician program or any of Meridian’s 20 plus career training programs will have an opportunity to apply for spring 2021 admission in November. Adults will be able to apply online at meridiantech.edu/adults. High school students will need to visit with their counselor.
