Teens celebrate comic books with popular superhero movie

Story provided by Stillwater Public Library

Payne County teens are invited to the Stillwater Public Library (SPL) on Friday, Jan. 26, at 6 p.m. for “Teen Superhero Movie Night.” This event is for teens in grades six through twelve, and those that attend will enjoy pizza, comic book-themed snacks and other goodies. The library requests registration for this event.

After being bitten by a radioactive spider from an alternate dimension, Miles Morales must venture into different dimensions in this sequel to the 2018 movie. Now that Miles has been a superhero for 16 months, he discovers that other versions of him are traveling across dimensions. Soon, a villain from Miles’s past threatens the multiverse, and he must work against time to protect his friends, family and, ultimately, the universe. This movie is rated PG and runs for 136 minutes.

Jordan Stine, SPL’s teen librarian, looks forward to starting the New Year with a laid-back program.

“This is the sequel to one of my favorite movies of all time,” Stine said. “We showed the first movie during summer reading this last year, and lots of teens attended. We hope to encourage teens to visit the library for a fun and casual event where they can hang out with friends and watch an awesome film.”

January’s movie program was planned with the assistance of TAC (Teen Advisory Council) members, who help the teen librarian plan programs, provide input on which young adult materials to order and volunteer for events and projects as needed. Members earn community service hours that library staff verify for resumes, college applications and other programs requiring proof of volunteer hours. They also gain leadership experience along with making new friends and community connections.

The Friends of the Stillwater Public Library will provide snacks and drinks for those attending. For a comfortable experience, Stine recommends teen attendees bring blankets and pillows to help them relax while enjoying the movie.

Registration for “Teen Superhero Movie Night” can be found at stillwaterok.gov/LibraryRegister. The SPL teen librarian asks interested attendees to register in advance to receive email reminders about the program. Those interested in applying for TAC may also register on the library’s website or by calling the Help Desk at (405) 372-3633 x8106.
