(STILLWATER, OKLAHOMA / July 11, 2016) – Stillwater City Council will read a special proclamation in honor of the 60th anniversary of Sister Cities International and Stillwater’s 30 years of friendship with its sister city, Kameoka, Kyoto, Japan, at its regular meeting Monday, July 11.
The meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. in the council hearing room at the Stillwater Municipal Building at 723 S. Lewis St. The proclamation will celebrate sister cities relationships and their impact on world peace with the proclamation of Friday, July 15 as Sister Cities International Day.
“It is remarkable that so many individuals and organizations have been touched by this 30-year partnership that continues to form new bonds between our people and our cities,” said Larry Jones, Stillwater Sister Cities Council chair. “We look forward to continuing to provide opportunities for exchanges and programs that fulfill the Sister Cities International goals of peace and friendship in the world.”
The Sister Cities organization was founded in 1956 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower at the White House Conference on Citizen Diplomacy. The organization now helps over 550 U.S. member cities, counties and states establish relationships with over 2,100 communities in 145 countries, spanning six continents.
The organization began with a mission to create more community-led, global relationships so people from different cultures could understand their differences and build partnerships in hopes of lessening the chance of national conflicts.
