Readers and book lovers are encouraged to come browse and shop the Stillwater Public Library’s fall used book sale on Thursday, Sept. 15, through Sunday, Sept. 18. Thousands of books, audiobooks and movies will be available to purchase. Proceeds from the sale fund new library materials and free community programs.

The sale will take place in the north building of the Stillwater Public Library, with books filling rooms on both the first and second floors. Friends’ members and library staff are looking forward to having the sale return to the library.

“We had the spring book sale at the Payne County Fairgrounds, but transporting the books was quite an undertaking,” said Holly Hartman, Friends of the Library member. “It’ll be nice having the sale return home to the library.”

The sale begins on Thursday with a Friends of the Library member preview from 5-8 p.m. Anyone who purchased a Friends’ membership in 2022 or who is a lifetime Friends’ member is eligible to attend. Non-members are also welcome to pay $10 at the door to become a Friend of the Library and gain entry into the preview sale. Buyers at the preview are limited to 100 items, including 50 children’s books.

The sale opens to the general public on Friday from 12-8 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. The popular $1 bag sale takes place on Sunday from 1:30-4 p.m. Shoppers are given bags they can fill with books of their choice with no limit on the number of bags purchased.

Items for the sale mostly come from community member donations throughout the year and cover a vast array of subjects, including fiction, mystery, sci-fi, biographies, classics, poetry, history, cookbooks, crafting, religion and philosophy, among many others.

“Both the Friends and the Stillwater Public Library are incredibly grateful for book donations,” Hartman said. “The annual book sales are a tremendous community effort that gives Stillwater access to inexpensive books and raises funds for library programs like community-wide reading series and the summer reading program.”

Hardbacks sell for $1, paperbacks, DVDs and other media for 50 cents and children’s books for 25 cents. The Friends accept cash and checks only, and no sales tax is charged on purchases.
