The Stillwater Community Singers invite the community to enjoy this unforgettable evening of music during their Spring Concert at the Stillwater Community Center on April 23, at 7:30 p.m. The Singers have been performing in concerts for over 25 years and are excited to share their joy with people in Stillwater and the surrounding area. Concerts are free to the public with a reception following in the Lowry Activity Center.
The music for the concert was specially selected for the Mixed Chorus by Director Judy White. She chose the theme of the concert because the music is truly unforgettable and has stood the test of time by its popularity through the years and the beauty of the words and melodies, so relevant to the culture.
Selections include: Unforgettable, words/music by Irving Gordon and made popular by Nat King Cole; My Way, lyrics by Paul Anka, music by Jacques Reveaux and Claude Francois, made popular by Frank Sinatra. Don’t Get Around Much Anymore, words by Bob Russell, Music by Duke Ellington. If Ever I Would Leave You from Camelot, words by Alan Jay Lerner, music by Frederick Loewe. I Got Rhythm, words and music by George and Ira Gershwin; Taking a Chance on Love, words by John Touche and Ted Fetter, music by Vernon Duke; Blue Skies, words and music by Irving Berlin; Moon River, words by Johnny Mercer; music by Henry Mancini; Jerome Kern: In Concert, a medley including Look for the Silver Lining, Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, All the Things You are, Ol’ Man River, The way You Look Tonight and I’ve Told Ev’ry Little Star.
The Women’s Chorus, under the direction of Paula Fitch, will perform Gershwin for Girls, a medley including Someone to Watch Over Me, The Man I Love, and I’ve Got a Crush On You. Also, It’s Only A Paper Moon, lyrics by Billy Rose and E. Y. Harburg, music by Harold Arlen.
Kim Strom, piano accompanist for the Singers, will perform a medley of TV Show Theme songs. Kim’s piano solos have always been one of the highlights of each concert.
The 46-member chorus has been in rehearsals since January, meeting on Thursdays of each week at the Stillwater Community Center. The Singers perform in three concerts each year: Spring, Fall, and Christmas. The Singers have always appreciated the support of the City of Stillwater, which has provided rehearsal and concert space and the Stillwater Community Center staff who have provided sound, lighting, and set-up/take-down at the concerts. The Stillwater News-Press and Store-It-Rite have co-sponsored the concerts, and the generous donations from the public have provided funding for music, supplies, and expenses for various services.
*Editor’s Note: Shortly before uploading the April issue to the printer, we received notice that due to the COVID-19 Coronavirus pandemic, the Stillwater Community Singers have canceled their spring concert and rehearsals. We have chosen to run the original story about their concert in an effort to highlight their hours of work in rehearsals as well as to raise awareness about this organization and how they enhance quality of life for its members and the citizens of Stillwater.
