Stillwater Public Library (SPL) invites fans of science fiction to join the Sci-Fi Film Club for its latest series, “Sci-Fi in the Wastelands.” The club, which has been meeting at the Library since 2014, is a film and discussion group dedicated to sharing their love of the sci-fi genre that meets on the third Thursday of each month at 6 p.m. from Feb. through May. All films will be free and open to the public; however, anyone under 18 must attend with a parent or guardian.

Jordan Stine, an adult services librarian at SPL, sees the Sci-Fi Film Club as an excellent opportunity for locals with similar interests to get together and bond over a shared love of all things sci-fi.

“Watching movies with similar themes really creates an engaging discussion of the genre itself,” Stine said. “I’m relatively new to leading the club, but discovering hidden gems and getting to discuss something I’m passionate about is an invaluable part of what the Library offers with these programs.”

Stine also finds the group to be very welcoming.

“Everyone’s so friendly and there’s never a dull moment in the conversations that follow the films,” Stine said. “Even if a movie was released years ago or was not received well, there will always be plenty to talk about.”

Jim Long, a long-time Sci-Fi Film Club attendee, also appreciates the casual environment.

“Everyone’s opinions and insights are welcome, but no one should feel compelled to contribute,” Long said. “The great thing about this club is that it’s a safe space for everyone to appreciate the genre free of scrutiny and pressure.”

The upcoming series, “Sci-Fi in the Wastelands,” focuses on movies that examine the human condition of survival in the face of extreme adversity.

“Most people who think of the post-apocalypse think of human causes; diseases, zombies, etc.,” Stine said. “But there’s a lot of creativity within the science fiction genre intertwined with the apocalypse, and we hope to discuss how this affects the films in this series.”

The Sci-Fi Film Club invites the public to brave these films that depict a less than ideal future, engage in a lively discussion and partake in complementary drinks and popcorn courtesy of the Friends of the Stillwater Public Library.

For more information about the film series, including film titles and registration, visit the Library’s website at library.stillwater.org/register.php. While registration is not required, it does help ensure that there are enough refreshments for everyone in attendance.
