Starting a Business Post-Pandemic

Enterprising citizens hoping to take advantage of the reopening of city life by starting their own business can sign up for the Stillwater Public Library’s “Starting Your Business” virtual program on Saturday, June 5, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The program, presented by Brad Rickelman from Meridian’s Center for Business Development, will explain the basics of market research, developing a business strategy, legal requirements, financing a business and more.

During the program, Rickelman will address changes the pandemic brought to the business landscape. With COVID restrictions easing, prospective business owners may be left wondering how the new normal will look. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s website suggests that some of the changes made during the pandemic are here to stay and that emerging entrepreneurs need to take these new expectations into consideration when starting a business.

Rickelman agrees.

“Businesses had to adapt to consumer needs with new or improved forms of sales communication,” said Rickelman. “New businesses will need to support options such as curbside delivery and pickup options. It’s what is now expected of most businesses.”

To meet these new expectations, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce advises businesses to create more flexible marketing plans and have a willingness to adapt to customer behavior. Rickelman adds that developing a robust online presence serves as one of the most valuable tools for post-pandemic businesses.

“Depending on the business, a strong online presence could be preferred over a physical store,” said Rickelman. “Most consumers are now familiar with doing business online, and some find it preferable over going into a store.”
